Yes you can earn 15 free PDUs just by listening to The Project Management Podcast™. Best of all... it's free!
Podcasts have emerged as a valuable tool for project management related education. They are a simple method of delivering pm-based thought and education to the project management community at-large. This is especially true for those practitioners among us to whom geography or scheduling is a roadblock.
This is why it has been possible for you as a PMP® to claim Category 2-SDL PDUs for listening to project management related podcasts. This has been in effect since 2006. SDL stands for Self Directed Learning. Please refer to the PMI's official list of Professional Development Unit (PDU) Qualifying Activities for all the details about PDUs.
There are a few basic rules to remember:
  • You can only submit 15 Category 2-SDL PDUs for each certification cycle (= every 3 years).
  • You can claim 1 Cat 2-SDL PDU for each hour of listening to podcasts on topics that relate to the Knowledge Areas in the PMBOK Guide.
  • If a podcast is not 60 minutes in duration, then you have to listen to several podcasts that discuss the same topic and add them up. For instance: 2 x 30 minutes on risk management = 1 Cat 2-SDL PDU.
Please note that every PMP is subject to audit during the PDU submission process and that you may have to show in exactly what way you have earned all of your PDUs. The PMI reserves the right to reject some or all of the PDUs that you submit.
Our suggestion:
  • Subscribe to the The Project Management Podcast™ - it's completely free!
  • Listen to our episodes on your player. (Note: in iTunes you will only see about 5-6 episodes. The others are available on the website.)
  • Make sure that you listen to at least 15 hours of discussions. We publish a new episode about every 2 weeks. So keep listening and learning!
  • Claim a total of 15 Category 2-SDL PDUs.
  • Recommend us to your colleagues.
Here are the actual steps in order to claim the PDUs at PMI:
  • Go to https://www.pmi.org/CCRS/
  • Log in
  • Click on "Report PDUs" (Underneath the bold title "PDU Activity as of..."
  • Select "Category 2 SDL..." and click on Continue
  • Input the following information:
    • Program Title: Studying with The Project Management Podcast
    • Date started: When you began listening
    • Date selected: When you ended listening
    • Objectives: Input your own objectives for listening (You must define your own goals)
    • Resources & Hours: Enter "Podcast" as resource and the number of hours that you listened in total.
    • Process: Select the appropriate processes (depends on the episodes you listened to)
    • Knowledge Area: Select the appropriate Knowledge Area (depends on the episodes you listened to)
    • Industry: Select your industry
    • Provider Name: OSP International LLC
    • Address: PO Box 863
    • City: Silverado
