Female voice: The Project Management Podcast’s feature Interview: Today with Rory McCorkle, PMI’s Product Manager Credential.
Cornelius Fichtner: Hello everyone! We are still at the PMI® Global Congress here in Fort Worth in Texas and with me is Rory McCorkle from PMI. Hello, Rory!
Rory McCorkle: Yes, pleasure to be here, thank you!
Cornelius Fichtner: You are the Project Manager Credentials. Now, what does that mean? What do you exactly do and how are you involved with the new ACP certification?
Rory McCorkle: Absolutely. Essentially as the Product Manager, I’m responsible for truly leading the project team that’s working on the creation and development of the certification, ensuring that we’re getting the word out through good marketing communications ,ensuring that the product is positioned appropriately and that of course at the end of the day, we launch a product, continue to try to iterate that through improvements that we receive through private feedback and get it out into the market places and operational certification.
Cornelius Fichtner: So talk to people like me.
Rory McCorkle: Absolutely!
Cornelius Fichtner: Alright! PMI-Agile Certified Practitioner, PMI-ACP, what’s the history? When did it get started?
Rory McCorkle: It got started in 2009 shortly after the launch of the Agile Community of Practice which is of course, it was a lot of fanfare around. We had Mark Langley, our current CEO and Greg Ballestero, our former CEO, actually present at the Scrum gathering and Agile Alliance Conference back in 2009. And indeed, they got to see firsthand the spread of Agile. There’s one story that gets retold and told again where Greg asked a group that he was addressing: “How many of you are PMPs in the audience?” And majority of the audience raised their hand. They took careful note of that fact to see that there was a great spread of Agile within, indeed, our own stakeholders at PMI. That was really an interesting note and something that got back to us at headquarters.
So over the summer, we began a conversation with the leaders of the Agile Community of Practice on terms of what we might be able to do as PMI to better support Agile and the Community of Practice in any way. We really left it open and when we initially began the discussion, it was one about what might that look like. Is it a certification? Is it a best practices guide? Is it a standard? And through the process of conversation that we had with our steering committee which is made up of absolutely fabulous thought leaders in the Agile space, folks like Alistair Cockburn who has won the original authors, co-authors of The Manifesto. Folks like Michele Sliger who wrote the “Bridge to Agility” and just walked passed us a moment ago. And other folks who again have a great deal of thought leadership in the space. We really worked with them to talk about what that might look like and indeed, it was a good 9 months of conversation that led us to a decision in last August of 2010 that this was something we wanted to launch.
